Just how do they come up with the sash for Miss World? Well, the Head of Design of Hand & Lock explained the three initial steps in photos starting with the image on the left.Hand & Lock have been producing the world’s finest hand embroidery since 1767. We cover a wide range of niche markets from Civilian and Military Regalia through to Ecclesiastical and Couture, specialising in bespoke, individually crafted embroidery.
As a traditional embroidery company, our heritage reaches back to Roman times and as such, we have become world renowned as providers of the finest hand embroidery. We are a living antique, but moving with the times, bringing hand embroidery into the present. We are ready to take on all types of embroidery, big and small, and our rich history guarantees our clients consistency and quality every time.
Step 1: “Currently the sash is in its production. In the photos we see the traditional ground of silk dupion in a duck egg blue, featuring the working ‘MISS WORLD’ rendered in the appliqué technique.”
Step 2: “This technique is undertaken through the use of a ground fabric and the top fabric. One would cut the top fabric with scissors the desired shape, affix this in the correct composition to the ground fabric, and then a hand-guided Irish sewing machine is used to produce a satin stitch around the edge of the top fabric shape. This is a satin stitch in a metallic silver.”
Step 3: “The stones are a clue to the next stage of the embroidery, but that will have to wait until next time.”
