Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola of Nigeria wins World Muslimah 2013 in Jakarta.
While everyone is busy with Miss World 2013 in Bali, there is a different kind of pageant celebration that held its finals in Jakarta (where MW is supposed to stage the coronation night). World Muslimah 2013, the only Muslim pageant in the world, named its winner (only the 3rd since its inception) in the person of Obabiya Aisha Ajibola from Nigeria. With 20 candidates from 6 different participating countries, the delegates were judged primarily in the way they recite Koranic verses as well as their views on Islam.
While some camps would say that the warm welcome given by the capital to this unique competition is a slap on the face of the ongoing Miss World in more tolerant Bali, it is amusing to note that opposing contests for female delegates are being hosted by the same country at almost the same period of time. Was it a planned strategy to divert the attention of the locals (and the global Muslim community)? Could be. Regardless, if both events can only find a common sense of harmony in between, then Indonesia would have benefitted the most without negative publicities and loss of profits.
