During the visit of the Miss International 2014 contestants at a Traditional Tea House, they were taught how to make sweets to be consumed before drinking tea. And it really sparked interest from most of them, especially the ladies from the predominantly tea-drinking countries who are used to just biting on biscuits or eating scones with their afternoon cups of the steaming hot drink. What beautifully distracted the attention of some – including Miss Philippines Bianca Guidotti – were the serving Japanese ladies wearing the traditional Kimono dress.

Next week, there will be a special Kimono fashion show where all of them will be garbed in the Japanese traditional garment – from the old styles to the more modern variations of the same.

That should be worth looking forward to! ;-)

Surely, this accomplished woman will bring forth a wealth of life experiences and knowledge in the worldwide competition. Add to that her personal fashion style and elegant bearing, she will definitely hit the mark when it comes to the more pageant-related aspects of the new challenge. And that is to be the successor of Mrs. World 2013 Kaley Spring.

Remember Hannah Mariz dela Guerra, Binibini 5 during the 2014 Bb. Pilipinas batch and who I had a crush on? Well, the pretty girl has resurfaced and in the movies at that.

She landed the role playing the wife of lead actor Dingdong Dantes in “Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles” which is the sequel of the box-office hit “Tiktik”. Actually, she took over the role originally played by actress Lovi Poe (who dropped out of the cast).

I can’t tell you how happy I am with the career shift of dear Hannah because she so deserves to be in the spotlight. After the Bb. Pilipinas experience, she went on to become Miss Sophie Paris PH and also acted in her first play “The Missing Peace” during Virgin Labfest: The Harvest at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles” will be part of the December-scheduled Metro Manila Film Festival. Watch the teaser below.

Throwback Thursdays: The Night Maria Stella Márquez Zawadzky won Miss International

Left to right: 3rd Runner-up Joyce Kay of England, 1st Runner-up Iona Pinto of India, Miss International 1960 Maria Stella Márquez Zawadzky, 2nd Runner-up Sigridur Geirsdottir of Iceland and Charlene Lundberg of the USA

image

Maria Stella Márquez Zawadzky of Colombia

For today’s Throwback, I thought of bringing you back to the night the very first Miss International was crowned last August 12, 1960 in Long Beach, CA. Of course, I wasn’t born at the time yet. But I can still remember reading about this long-forgotten but supremely interesting detail that led to the victory of Colombia’s Maria Stella Márquez Zawadzky.

image According to the account, the Top 5 Finalists were announced and they were Maria Stella Márquez Zawadzky of Colombia, Joyce Kay of England, Sigridur Geirsdottir of Iceland, Iona Pinto of India and Charlene Lundberg of the USA. At that point, it was getting more and more clear that the Colombian, Icelandic and Indian bets were neck-and-neck in competition. But just before the judges started with the final voting, Miss Iceland was already out of the picture and the title was a toss between Misses Colombia and India.

To help in the ranking, something peculiar happened. The five ladies were asked to stand in front of the judges for an extra ten (10) minutes – quite an eternity of waiting or a test of patience, if you will. It was during this period that Maria Stella Márquez Zawadzky defeated her eventual 1st Runner-up Iona Pinto by a slim margin. Just half a point.

image And you know what made the Indian lose? She stopped smiling during the ten (10) minutes of extra standing. Stella kept on with the happy face. This was revealed to Iona by one of the judges – Vincent Trotta – during a post-pageant reception.

Quite a unique way of breaking the deadlock, huh?

If not for the constant smile and effervescent presence of Miss Colombia, she would’ve lost the Miss International 1960 title to Miss India.

image Of course, we all know that Maria Stella Márquez Zawadzky is the beloved Madame Stella Márquez de Araneta who founded Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc. and has spearheaded the search for the country’s loveliest Filipina Beauty Queens since 1964 up to the present.

From the time she decided to settle down and marry Filipino businessman Jorge Araneta, Madame Stella moved to the Philippines where she has been living ever since. She might be Colombian by birth, but her heart definitely belongs to the country which has adopted her with open arms.

And since Miss International fever is currently on, this TBT on her is just what the Pageant Blogger ordered. ;-)

Gunning for Miss International 2014 is Shauny Bult of the Netherlands.

image

Shauny and Miss Philippines Shauny Bult

Last night, I was chatting with Miss Philippines Bianca Guidotti on FB when she was ‘invading’ the hotel room of her good friend Shauny Bult of the Netherlands. And it just so happened that I was really about to write a post about the Dutch fashion model from Boxtel. What a nice coincidence.

You might remember Shauny from Miss Earth 2012 here in Manila. For a while, she even scored a few modeling gigs with Carousel Productions. But this year, you will definitely keep her in mind even more. As Miss International Netherlands 2014, she is planning to perform much better in Tokyo, and has actually upped her game from the time she arrived in Japan. She may be chummy with a lot of contestants, but her gameplan remains focused on the crown. And our bet knows that she has one fierce challenger in her.

image

Shauny (foreground) taking a selfie with her assigned group in Miss International 2014.

While I initially tagged Shauny as a potential sleeper in the competition (and a definite part of my Top 15 so far), gut feel tells me now that she could be one serious contender. There is a far more relaxed vibe in her disposition compared to two years ago.

With that said, I will keep a more watchful eye on this one. ;-)

Watch Shauny’s brief intro vid for Miss International 2014 below.

P.S. I was told that Shauny checks out my blog from time to time. If you’re reading this right now, thank you! :-D

Desiree Cordero will see action in the next Miss Universe

image She’s 21 years old, stands 178cm and is passionate about kickboxing. And she will represent Spain in Miss Universe 2014 scheduled for January, 2015 in Doral Miami.

Enter Miss Universe Spain 2014 Desiree Cordero, the successor of Patricia Yurena Rodriguez who placed 1st Runner-up in last year’s edition in Moscow.

Desiree was crowned at the finals held inside Teatro Bodevil de Madrid. The successful fashion model, who plans to major in Oceanology in the future, will be extra busy during the holidays preparing for her trip to the US where she will try to improve on Spain’s placement.

Could she be the girl Donald Trump is looking for? ;-)

For today, the contestants of Miss International 2014 will be going to Aoi-Ryu Dance School where they will be taught the Traditional Sakura Dance (a staple dance demo in the pageant).

Videos of the dance lesson will be shown during the finals, but the actual performance could be part of the Kimono Fashion Show that will happen next week.

The Sakura dance they will be practicing is similar to what the ladies had to learn last year. Watch the video below courtesy of Missosology Coverage.

Frankie Cena will be the Miss World 2014 Web Presenter in London. And he will have the enviable job of following all the ladies in their activities and conducting interviews along the way. What’s more, he might also get the chance to facilitate some of the pre-pageant events.

That’s the kind of work I like. Sign me up if there’s a need for an understudy, Frankie!

Miss Philippines Bianca Guidotti takes a picture of her dinner tonight.

image

Who looks better - Bianca or the food above?

Sometimes, the sense of humor of Miss Philippines Bianca Guidotti amuses me. Just like tonight.

The Miss International 2014 contestants were treated to an authentic sushi dinner. And each one of them were given a bento meal to go with the yummy rolled rice Japanese delicacies. At first, she didn’t want to break the delicate arrangement of the food inside the box. She took a picture (see above) of the same before putting her chopsticks into action. But not before uploading the image and putting the hashtag #MyFoodLooksBetterThanMe

I changed my mind about what’s on the dining table tonight. Good thing there’s a nearby Japanese resto that delivers on the dot. Time to feast on my sushi platter now. And the Sea Urchins (Uni) are all mine. Yum!

Later. ;-)

Now we know which pageant the Russians prefer

Due to the tight dates in between Miss World and Miss Universe, a different Miss Russia will go to London as a result.

image

Yulia will be hard-pressed to take part in both MU and MW.

And so it came to pass.

The first of the twice-to-compete national pageant winners has finally caved in to the pressure of time.

Miss Russia 2014 Yulia Alipova just couldn’t participate in both Miss Universe 2014 and Miss World 2014 with barely a month in between to move from one to the next.

And guess where she is being sent? To Doral Miami, as expected. It’s a simple case of opting for Trump over Morley.

The beneficiary of the vacated Miss World Russia slot is now 2nd Runner-Up Anastasia Kostenko.

image

Miss World has now become Anastasia's gain.

It makes me wonder how this turn of events will sit with the Miss World Organization. Only two possibilities, in my opinion. Either Anastasia will do well in London for goodwill’s sake or she will just be a candidate going through the motions of representing her country but without the slimmest of chances to even place. Whatever happens, we might get to see two separate Russian ladies being crowned for MU and MW next year.

As for Yulia, she should figure out prominently in Miss Universe. After all, the Russian organizers have made it clear who is #1 for them.

Pageant and politics. Really strange bedfellows, especially after the third wheel has been kicked out of the mattress.

So will Rolene Strauss of South Africa holler next?

Your thoughts, dear readers? ;-)

Okay, before you guys assume that I simply gathered all Bianca’s pics and placed them on grids to come up with a fresh topic for the day, there is a good basis for everything.

She is such a genuine and sweet girl!
she is I think the friendliest around
She is one of my besties!
“Just love her!

These are just some of the comments I got from FB chats with other contestants about our Bianca Guidotti. If she keeps it up, I see every reason for her to become the Friendship award winner.

Miss Philippines Bianca Guidotti and Miss Netherlands Shauny Bult are like the best of friends in MI2014 now. They might even compete for the Friendship Award!

Wouldn’t it just be so heartwarming to see a truly amicable lady take it all the way and win the Mikimoto crown? Miss Philippines is clearly putting her best foot forward with the candidates. And it’s not all for show, mind you. ;-)

Miss Universe Philippines 2014 MJ Lastimosa pushes herself hard during fitness trainings with Bench Ortiz

image

Practicing her smile now

Just when everyone thinks that it’s all Miss International, Miss Earth, Miss Intercontinental, Miss Supranational and Miss World that we should be posting about nowadays, here’s a new one on our Miss Universe Philippines 2014 MJ Lastimosa who will actually be the last major pageant fighter to see action for the country. But that doesn’t meant cutting herself more slack in preparations. On the contrary, she continuously pushes herself to the limits in all aspects of training – be it in the gym with Bench Ortiz or in the make-up sessions with Gio Flores or the Q&A/Interview one-on-ones with Oli Sara.

No letting up, especially now when so many important things are at stake. MJ won’t be fully happy with the numbers 2 and 3 associated with her. Not even the prospects of becoming the very first Filipina 2nd Runner-up placer in Miss Universe will do. She wants to be #1. ;-)

Miss Grand International 2014 Daryanne Lees Garcia offering a rose to a soldier in Thailand's Muslim south.

image

Wearing a veil underneath the crown while visiting the south of Thailand

In living up to the vision and mission of Miss Grand International, recently-crowned winner Daryanne Lees Garcia was accompanied by Mr. Nawatt Itsaragrisil to start with the host country itself in spreading peace and goodwill. The two of them started with the Muslim areas of Thailand to forge friendships and hopefully strike a chord of unity. Sounds like a mighty objective at the onset. But without any sincere attempts to do so, efforts will only go to naught.

Some jaded individuals may look at the photos in this post as purely for show or photo opportunity to blend well with the anti-war thrust of the pageant. Regardless, there still must be some good ounce of well-meaninged intentions to do the same. :-)

It was a happy tummy-filling sushi party that all the Miss International 2014 contestants went to last night. And they couldn’t be happier as every single one of them has been looking forward to something authentic like this from Day 1.

After arriving at Sushi-Zanmai, they filled up all the tables and did not wait long for their dinner treats to be served. Never mind that the video cameras continued to roll even if they might be caught opening their mouth while eating the delicious food in their individual bento boxes. The experience was all worth it.

And after the burps and all, they posed for a souvenir group shot for the pageant’s FB page and the restaurant owners themselves. Everyone went back to the hotel tired after a day’s worth of activities but full and satisfied with the yummy ending. ;-)

In any global beauty competition, the candidates from Latin America always seem to have the most attractive (and most prepared) set of contenders. And Miss International 2014 is no different. In fact, there are already potential winners in the list of almost-twenty joiners from the region.

If you ask me, I would consider Vianey Del Rosario Vazquez Ramirez of Mexico, Zuleika Kiara Suarez Torrenegra of Colombia and Michelle Bertolini of Venezuela as the three best Latina delegates. But if I push for a Top 5, I would definitely include Aileen Bernal of Panama and possibly Fiorella Ximena Peirano Medina of Peru.

Aside from Miss Grand Philippines 2014 1st Runner-Up Rosevemme Marie Fajardo, the 2nd Runner-Up has also been awarded a pageant representation abroad. While Terizz was originally asked by JDV to wear the Miss United Continents Philippines sash, it looks like a new franchise has been clinched. So instead of waiting till mid-2015 for the next Miss United Continents to come around, she was appointed for Miss Heritage International instead.

The ballet dancer from Tarlac will have her hands full between now and November 24, the day of her departure for Kathmandu. She will be staying in the Nepalese capital for two weeks as the coronation night will be on December 6.

Good luck, Terizz! :-)

In any global beauty contest, the candidates are always divided into different groups in order to maximize the fulfillment of different activities such as sponsor visits, tours to different sights and the like. In the ongoing Miss International 2014, there are four – A, B, C and D. And you can always see in the photos why some girls are inseparable or a particular bunch would always be tailing each other around.
Enjoying pasta inside a Shakey's Pizza Parlor in Tokyo

Enjoying pasta inside a Shakey’s Pizza Parlor in Tokyo

But regardless of the groupings, though, they all remain one big sisterhood. There are no rules preventing someone from Group A to get close with a member of, say, Group D and vice-versa. In the same light, there is no stopping a non-Spanish speaking delegate to keep sticking with the Latinas or a Caucasian always hanging out with the Asians.

This is like United Nations. A gathering of different nationalities which, in essence, is unity at its finest. Stripped down to basics, though, it is also like an international summer camp where the ladies treat each other both as sisters and opponents.
