The Forty One (Original) Earth Warriors of Miss Philippines Earth 2015 divided into regions

mpe20151 Now that we’re down to thirty-eight (38) Official Candidates for Miss Philippines Earth 2015, did it make my life easier for the usual pageant predictions I share a few days or less before finals night? Not at all. At least not with the ones I am seeing as the likeliest to spoil the very-top-of-the-heap finishers this coming Sunday, May 31.

You see, I have comfortably zeroed in on the possible successor of Miss Philippines Earth 2014 Jamie Herrell (who will move on to her duties as Miss Earth 2014 afterwards). Like it or not, this year is going to be a tight-as-a-tick battle between Chanel Olive Thomas (of San Antonio, Nueva Ecija) and Angelia Ong (of the City of Manila) for #1. Between the two, one is definitely getting Earth and the other will have to settle with Air. And frustrating as it may sound, the thirty-six other ladies will have to be contented grabbing the remaining elemental (plus Eco-Tourism) spots in the Top 5. Whoever among them is found most deserving will join Chanel and Angelia in the winning circle. It’s that blunt (read: predictable) of a scenario.

top16 For now, let me formally present to you the sixteen (16) Earth Warriors in my first cut, which is honestly not a big lot to holler about. Because in the next trimming, there will be only ten (10) left, and half of this number, or the lower five of the Top 10, are already considered runners-up for 2015 despite equally going through the motions of Q&A and Evening Gowns. The minute another half is called to make the top quintet, the winners will have already been announced, save the rankings.

image

The first eight (8) of my Top 16 arranged according to regions, with NCR coming in first.

image

The second eight (8) of my Top 16 with part of Southern Tagalog down to Mindanao

Three (3) from NCR, Four (4) from Northern Luzon, Four (4) from Southern Luzon, Four (4) from the Visayas and a single qualifier from Mindanao – that is how I classify the composition of my Top 16. As expected, the 15th and 16th placers on my list are the hardest to fill, but the easiest to replace if need be. But I won’t give you the full satisfaction of knowing those semifinal cellar dwellers anymore. Let’s just say that I can easily give those rankings to the ones graded as #17 or #18.

top10 It’s the Top 10 that I found tricky. I found myself vacillating back and forth among three (3) girls who should make the cut, where only only one of them can move on. The first nine (9) places are already filled up courtesy of Chanel Olive Thomas, Angelia Ong, Diana Mackey (of Cabanatuan City), Alyssa Ashley Calimlim (of Villasis, Pangasinan), Sofia Loren Deliu (of Baguio City), Alyanna Cagandahan (of Santa Cruz , Laguna), Chezka Carandang (of Quezon City), Carla Valderrama (of Siniloan, Laguna) and Mhon Theress Menaling (of Mandaue City). I had a hard time choosing from among Darlene Pepito (of Ormoc City), Jian Cayla Salazar (of Guinobatan, Albay) and Jona Sweett (of Iloilo City). I did not resort to blind-folded dipping of my hand inside a bag containing their names, though. I made things painless and went for the Best in Long Gown Gold Medalist. How sweet it is then for Jona Sweett as my 10th.

top51 Now in this segment, I decided to be anti-climactic. No use lingering on the suspense anymore. I already made the choice of Chanel Olive Thomas and Angelia Ong as my personal predictions for Miss Philippines Earth 2015 and Miss Philippines Air 2015, respectively. In addition, I strongly feel that Sofia Loren Deliu would make a wonderful Miss Philippines Eco-Tourism 2015 given her profession and strong advocacies that would serve the environment well. That leaves us with Water and Fire, or the elements that actually rank 3rd and 4th.

Diana Mackey is a relatively easy choice for Water. She has been running 3rd mostly in my scoresheet, and I really wouldn’t mind seeing two ladies from the Province of Nueva Ecija in the Top 5. It’s my choice of Alyssa Ashley Calimlim for Fire that made me slightly squirm in my seat. I was tossing between her and Chekza Carandang or Alyanna Cagandahan to get in. This is where I just made the one hard decision to give up on the ladies from Quezon City and Santa Cruz, Laguna. There are inner workings that I cannot fully expound on anymore. Unless someone privately eggs me to do so.

So here, I give you my Top 5 for Miss Philippines Earth 2015, in proper order:

I’m jumping the gun on my Top 5 and how I feel the elements will fall into place. (Photo credit: Joselito Caleon for Fabmanilaph)

I’m jumping the gun on my Top 5 and how I feel the elements will fall into place. (Photo credit: Joselito Caleon for Fabmanilaph)

Angelia VS Chanel all the way!

Angelia VS Chanel all the way!

I stated earlier that the fight between Chanel and Angelia for the crown is going to be tough as nails. Any one of the two making it would make the organizers very happy. They are both sweet, charming, committed and down-to-earth (no pun intended). So it will really boil down to that one final question that will be answered in the penultimate portion of the pageant proceedings. One wrong reply (or choice of words/statements) and it could be game over. But hey, Miss Philippines Air ain’t bad a reward for all the hardwork all throughout. It’s just that Miss Philippines Earth will compete in Miss Earth 2015, aside from being long remembered by the faithful fans and followers.

Wait, what’s the name of last year’s Miss Philippines Air again? Just kidding. She’s Dian Querrer, of course. For crying out loud, can’t we just have two (2) Miss Philippines Earth 2015 winners for a crazy change? Just this once. ;-)

With Mister International as the lead male pageant honor for Misters 2015, the country's hosting of its 10th Anniversary from the same team is being positively felt.

The Misters 2015 Finals will be happening at Resorts World Manila this coming September.

The Misters 2015 Finals will be happening at Resorts World Manila this coming September.

This year, male pageantry has been going great guns in the country. After Mr. Republic of the Philippines 2015, Mister United Continents Philippines 2015 and the ongoing Mister United Continents 2015, the two biggies are coming your way. I call them the Twin Peaks of Male Pageantry in 2015 – Misters 2015/The Mister Filipinas Search and the 10th Anniversary of Mister International. With PEPPs Foundation (or Prime Events Productions Philippines Foundation Inc.) behind the two big projects, expect things to be bigger and grander.

First on the pipeline is Misters 2015 scheduled for September at the Newport Performing Arts Theater of Resorts World Manila. Compared to the roster of candidates last year, the confirmed 2015 participants are really worth looking forward to. And I’m not even factoring the various reps of Filipino Communities abroad just yet.

With Neil Perez as the reigning Mister International, it automatically follows that his national successor should be an outstanding individual, knowing fully well that back-to-back wins are extremely challenging. In the same breath, the next-in-line for the titles of Adam Davies, Joseph Doruelo and Judah Cohen are expected to surpass their individual achievements.

image

A fresh new look and MU-inspired catchphrase for Mister International with Neil Perez

itsmorefun Now, come November, the much bigger event will be hosted right here in Manila (with the Ilocos Region as the reported provincial partner for the road caravan of all the foreign delegates). At the moment, there are forty-seven (47) expected candidates based on the number of countries accredited to officially send their entries to the main competition – the 10th Anniversary of Mister International – which the organizers are aiming to mount as the best edition ever.

And to make the whole thing more special, two (2) Mister International titleholders will be on hand to act as big brothers of the participants – Neil Perez (2014/15) and Jose Anmer Paredes of Venezuela (2013).

image

November 28 will be the date for the 10th Mister International in Manila

PEPPSFoundation The hardworking men and women behind PEPPs, led by its President Carlo Morris Galang, have spent days and nights planning the two pageants. And they continue to do so to make sure that all details are fully covered – sponsorships, venues for the pre-pageant & finals, hotel accommodations, provincial partners that will provide the meaningful out-of-town trips for the candidates, designers committed to share their creations, transportation, media affiliations (including the potential airing TV network) and more.

Everything is fitting nicely at this point, and I must say that I’m impressed with the running developments so far. Kudos to the whole team, especially Melvin Galang, Jhune Salud, Alper Morales, James Galang, Marianne Galang, JP Anonuevo, Richard Montoya, Ian Domine, Olan Roque, Alex Moico and Dan Apacible.

The hardworking men and women of Misters 2015 and the 10th Mister International

You will like what you’ll see with Misters 2015 and the 10th Mister International.

And that’s a promise. :-)

After the pre-pageant night last Wednesday, the finals of Mister United Continents 2015 will come to a climax tonight with the selection of the winner among the seventeen (17) candidates. A couple of new favorites have emerged, including Mister Angola Antonio Chimbanda (left photo) who looks adorably dashing in his Onesimus Barong Tagalog and Mister Dominican Republic Larry Taveras. Somebody whispered to my ear that height has become a significant consideration (as expected) among the judges, and this will not augur too well for a couple of them despite being tagged as potential winners.

Let’s see who will show consistency and take his bid to victorious heights. The top finisher will have the honor of becoming the first-ever Mister United Continents.

Best of luck to everyone! :-)

Miss International 2013 Bea Rose Santiago spent a few days in Arizona. And she literally enjoyed every minute of her sunny vacation in the Grand Canyon State (or Copper State if you will). Together with Marc Nash, they were like cute teenagers on an extended date or tireless tourists taking advantage of being toured around the place with friends. She even had a picture taken with cacti (see below).

Let’s watch out for her other state pit stops in the US. I’m quite sure she will upload more. ;-)

A 27 year-old Health & Wellness enthusiast of GNC Armal from Beirut, Lebanon was proclaimed as the inaugural winner of Mister United Continents 2015 last night at the Tanghalang Pasigueño. Kamel Raad defeated sixteen (16) other delegates on his way to becoming his country’s first international pageant titleholder this year. He is my top pick for the victory.

His court includes 1st Runner-Up Bobbi Rahman Tehgu of Indonesia who gave it a good fight till the end. 2nd Runner-Up is Kristian Denver Diaz of Canada, with Antonio Chimbanda of Angola getting 3rd Runner-Up honors. To complete the Top 6 are 4th Runner-Up Nguyen Quang Huan of Vietnam and 5th Runner-Up Deepaj Sharma of India.

While host delegate Reynaldo Cataluna III did not make it to the winning circle, the 3rd place finish of Mister Canada (who has 100% Pinoy lineage) makes up for the same. Together with the bets of Albania, Australia, Bahamas, Dominican Republic and Guam, he finished in the Top 12.

If you’re beautiful, shapely and a good swimmer, this unique pageant could be what you’re waiting for. The local franchise holder of Miss Mermaid International is looking for that girl who will be named Miss Mermaid International Philippines 2015 and represent the country in the world finals scheduled this coming September 26-October 5 in Sheraton Soma Bay, Egypt.

What is this competition all about?

Miss Mermaid International is the only competition of its kind where contestants are selected based on beauty, figure and swimming skills.

If you check the website, here is additional info about the competition.

How does one judge a Miss Mermaid International contest?

Judging a Miss Mermaid Contest
There are 6 sections of judging a mermaid

– THE FACE
– THE FIGURE
– THE INTERVIEW
– CREATIVITY (decoration of mermaid costume)
– LONG-DISTANCE DIVING max 30m
– MERMAID POSING UNDER WATER

Each jury member can give 0 – 10 – 20 – 30 – 40 – 50 – or 60 points in each of the 6 sections. 360 points are the most a mermaid can get by one jury member

I guess the ladies who do the mermaid show at Manila Ocean Park would come to mind first. And I’m not even kidding. Otherwise, good-looking Filipinas who can swim well (and not just the very basics) might be interested to give it a try. PM Ovette Ricalde on Facebook for more details. ;-)

P.S. Below is a video of what happened during the first Miss Mermaid held in Germany last year.

Anjie channels her inner Angelina Jolie

I was reading today’s issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and happily saw an article for Happy Skin that had Anjie Balatbat as the model. I promptly sourced for these photos (taken by Toff Tiozon) so I can come up with a quick second blog about her.

I already featured Anjie last year after meeting her in person during the Miss World Philippines 2014 finals at SM MOA Arena. Jonas Gaffud made the introduction. And boy, was I amazed with her beauty. Her height of 5’11” (a little over actually) is for real. And I just can’t help but gush on the spot.

Now that she has been living in the country, and actively takes modeling projects from Mercator, it could only mean that she is fulfilling an all-important residency that would qualify her for you-know-what. Alternately, she can also be tipped to join Miss World Philippines 2015. Given that Ms. Cory Quirino is very much open to having an exotic-looking winner, Anjie might just fit the bill.

Let’s see where the tide will bring this smoldering hot beauty. ;-)

Five of the Official Candidates for Miss Manila 2015 are (left to right): Vien Santiago, Anna Conanan, Regina Maala, Crissia del Atienza and Christine Balaguer

My friend, hair and make-up artist Carissa Cielo F. Medved, is quite fortunate to have been able to enter five (5) lucky ladies – Anna Conanan, Christine Balaguer, Crissia del Atienza, Regina Maala and Vien Santiago – as Official Candidates of Miss Manila 2015.

This could be a good break for her as a handler. After years of making beauty queens and models become more gorgeous for the ramp or a show, she is now looking at leveling up and, hopefully, making a winner out of one of them.

image

The girls' handler Carissa Cielo F. Medved

Back to the quintet, Christine Balaguer is already a familiar name and face to all of us. And Crissia del Atienza is the lady who was once named Miss Sophie Paris Philippines 2012. Regina Maala and Vien Santiago are relative pageant newbies, just as the pretty Anna Conanan who screened for Bb. Pilipinas 2015 last January.

I’d like to see how far they can take their bid in the competition. I am not automatically singling out Anna just yet, but she gives me that fair Nina Alagao vibe that could take her places with the right makeup and styling. Carissa will take care of that.

Good luck, girls! ;-)

I’m not posting this “Facercise” book by Carole Maggio just for promotional purposes. Truth is, Fitness Guru John Cuay will be gifting Miss Universe Philippines 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach with a copy very soon. As such, expect our diligent Miss Universe 2015 rep to go through the various instructional facial exercises which are totally non-invasive and painless. You only need your face and two hands to do the various steps (check out the sample video below) on a daily basis.

And don’t worry about looking silly while stretching and flexing your facial muscles. You won’t be doing the same in public anyways. Give it a try. I just did! ;-)

Pilipinas 2016 under the Aces & Queens camp. Of course, it’s still too early to tell if she is indeed dead serious about making that move. But this early, it should fan the flames of excitement among pageant fans and followers who never cease to check out on all the potential joiners in the nationals.

A photo collage of some of Adriano's designs

A photo collage of some of Adriano’s designs

received_10202960434092255 wpid-wp-1432450192097.jpeg Prior to the Long Gown Competition of Miss Philippines Earth 2015, the name of Adriano Samar did not ring much of a bell in pageant circles. But after one of his creations was worn by Miss Iloilo City Jona Sweett (right photo) who was eventually declared winner of the Gold Medal as best in the event, there was sudden interest in the Boracay-based fashion designer. Not that his stock soared overnight, but seeing the well-executed white gown prompted some people to ask about him and his works.

So instead of me coming up with a narrative about his entry into the fashion world, let’s hear it straight from Adriano Samar himself:

I am Adriano Sualog Samar, a budding fashion designer from Caticlan, Malay, Aklan…my high school dream was to be a famous fashion designer, and indeed became my passion! My Tita, Nelia Sancho (Miss Asia Pacific, 1972), who was the first person who believed in my talent, sent me to Ricky Reyes Learning Institute to be formally trained as a designer although it was just a short-term training. I also accomplished my college diploma in HRM in Aklan State University. After that, i went to Bahrain to work as a designer.

In two years time working overseas, I was given a chance to explore the fashion industry and discover technical skills in fashion design. I also had the chance to dress up a contestant of Miss Philippines – Bahrain and garnered several awards in the competition including Best in Gown and the title itself. Because of that, I was invited to style various photoshoots for Filipino fashion magazines such as Bahrain Confidential. At a young age, I reckoned that was my major accomplishment.

The knowledge that I was able to get working in Middle East polished my innate potential and that became a passport to compete in various local competitions when I decided to come back to my homeland. I was young and hungry for success so I went overseas to gain global experience.

When I thought I was ready, I came back home to launch my own fashion design, catering a clientele not just in Aklan but also to the entire region. In 2012, due to the fame I brought to my town after my brand creates waves in the local scene, our Mayor of Malay, Hon. John Yap awarded me as one of Outstanding Young Malaynon, a prestigious award by the LGU to succesful young professionals in our municipality.

My business also operates and is one of the well-recognized in Boracay Island which has a high demand for ready-to-wear bridal gowns since the beachfront is one of the best places to wed in the world. I also make tailored bridal gowns for several clients. I define my designs as innovative and the intricacy of its details without sacrificing the comfort. I have several celebrity clients such as Claudette Delos Reyes ( Miss Earth 2013, Miss Rachel Lobangco and Zara Aldana Mutya ng Pilipinas 2007.

image

This feature may not guarantee an immediate recall or popularity on the part of Adriano. But it will start the ball rolling, so to speak. And if he rises up to the occasion even more, then there’s really no other way to look but up.

Good luck to you! ;-)

Miss Philippines Earth and Miss Earth 2014 Jamie Herrell

Jamie (center) during her victory as MPE2014 last year

It has been a truly eventful year for 20 year-old Jamie Herrell.

When she decided to sign up for Miss Philippines Earth 2014, this beautiful Cebuana was always expressive of her desire to win the crown, citing that it is the one title she has been targetting in her fruitful pageant career. And she did (left photo). Aside from being picked as the top favorite, she made sure of living up to the hype and giving everyone excellent performances all throughout. From that point, she steadily cruised her way to wearing the Philippine sash in Miss Earth 2014. While her road in the international competition was relatively more bumpy and stressful, she still managed to maintain her calm and composure, earned the following of many pageant fans and ultimately became the country’s only Big 4* winner last year.

Jamie remains sweet and charming inspite of the double-tiered pageant celebrity status. And now that she is nearly reaching full circle as Miss Philippines Earth 2014 with the crowning of her successor tonight, allow me to give her my heartfelt thanks for a wonderful reign. There couldn’t have been a more deserving advocate of Mother Earth, and she deserves all the blessings coming her way.

Mabuhay ka, Jamie Herrell! :-D

Let us now reminisce on her win during MPE2014 by watching the full video of last year’s finals.

Mister United Continents 2015 may have assembled only seventeen (17) international delegates, but there is at least one who effortlessly stood out with his bright aura, engaging personality and highly photographable face. Mister Guam Robert Davis is the guy. And while he managed to get as far as the Top 12, loads of followers are wondering why he didn’t even reach the upper half and clinched at least a runner-up position. Sure, he is not as tall as the winner (who deserved the title, without a doubt) or two of the next placers. But his looks and efforts could have made him reach higher than what he ended up consoling himself with.

At any rate, I’d like to thank Robert for competing and giving it a good fight. You will be always welcome here in the country for any project/s that will hopefully land in your lap after the competition. ;-)

Long installed as one of the top favorites for the win, Angelia has her toughest opponent Chanel Olive Thomas of San Antonio, Nueva Ecija settling with the Miss Philippines Air title. Catherine Joy Marin of Bago City took Miss Philippines Water, with Carla Valderrama of Siniloan, Laguna clinching Miss Philippines Fire. Rounding up the Top 5 is Jona Sweett of Iloilo City who was named Miss Philippines Eco-Tourism.

As expected, Angelia and Chanel were neck-to-neck for the new MPE2015 crown. The breaks went the former’s way, though. It’s unfortunate that Diana Mackey of Cabanatuan City (who was stunningly resplendent tonight) failed to crack the Top 5 after she delivered a less than satisfactory turn during the Q&A.

All in all, this year’s edition has really been predictable for the Top 2 placements – Angelia and Chanel. Catherine from Bago City was a truly pleasant surprise, while Carla and Jona in the winning circle are just fine.

Congratulations to all the winners! :-D

Reigning winner Tegan Martin

Miss Universe Australia is one of my favorite national pageants in the world. It may not be have the grand appeal of Miss Venezuela or the festive atmosphere of Bb. Pilipinas, but the roster of candidates every year keeps me excited. Aussie ladies are some of the most beautiful in my pageant eyes, and the 2015 candidates did not fail my expectations. There are thirty-three (33) of them, and more than half could be the eventual winner for just one (1) title and international representation.

Take a look at a dozen of my picks below, and see if you can pinpoint the potential successor of Tegan Martin (left photo) on June 5, the scheduled finals of the event.

This is such a strong batch of 33 contenders. Above are 6 of my Top 12.

The six ladies above complete my Top 12.

Cutting the twelve (12) bets in half is a big challenge. Coming up with just a Top 5 gives me an even greater headache. I know that we have already gotten used to the template of a Miss Universe Australia winner based on the titleholders in the past ten years. But I have an itching that the organizers might be looking at giving Donald Trump a slightly different Aussie after the last two (2) entries (Tegan Martin and Olivia Wells) failed to enter the Top 5.

So bravely now, here are the beauties I’d like to see enter the magic circle come Friday night. I added a sixth because it’s simply too hard to ignore one more girl. And FYI, I chose to share photos showing them with less make-up and more relaxed.

One of these six ladies could be the potential Miss Universe Australia 2015
