Kevin will come to Manila for Misters2015

A 20 year-old student at the Facoltá Economia of Roma Tre University was elected Mr. Bachelor Philippines Italy 2015 at the Teatro Italia in Rome yesterday afternoon. Kevin John Fichera will now be the official representative of the Filipino Community of Italy in the upcoming Misters2015 / Mister Filipinas Search that will culminate in the national finals on September 13.

Going into the competition, Kevin was already one of the heavy favorites based on online popularity (he is actually my #1 choice to top it all). And in the midst of the actual event, he scooped two important special awards – Best in Swimwear and Best in Formal Wear – that helped seal his victory. He was also named Mr. Globe (Telecoms) and one of the Top 5 for Mr. Megaworld.

Kevin succeeded Pierre Luigi Reyes who was the first winner of the male pageant last year. On hand to award him was Madam Precious Anne Medina, the Head of Mister Filipinas Search.

When Angelia Ong answered that tricky question

MPE2015 Angelia Ong by Collin Yap

MPE2015 Angelia Ong by Collin Yap

It amuses me – both positively and otherwise – to no end how watching a live or live stream of beauty pageants can bring out the (measly number of) good and (overwhelmingly) bad in people. Being judgmental seemed to be the trend last night when the comments on the Q&A of Miss Philippines Earth 2015 Angelia Ong (on Rappler’s FB Page) started a flood of mostly negative replies that brought out the grammar nazis and preachy individuals from their iron-clad shells.

There were those who questioned how the question about same-sex marriage should have been worded to elicit the right answer. And there were also the ones who poked fun at how Angelia mentioned “sex marriage” instead of “same-sex marriage” in her answer (keep in mind how the tension during the segment was extra palpable). But more glaring are the commenters who started spewing biblical quotes and religious beliefs after Angelia gave an affirmative response on the subject matter. It was a heady mix of exchange that effortlessly revealed how these people simply love their quick transformations to fault-finders extraordinaire.

I have no intentions of playing lawyer to Angelia’s defense. And I have long learned to ignore the proliferation of the grammar enforcers among us. But for the extremely religious, there is always a right time and place to air such fundamental thoughts. I like the way how a poster on writingforums.org named “Chicken Freak” stated the following on being preachy.

“…Don’t twist the story to serve the message. If the story can’t stand on its own just as a good yarn, it’s going to be a poor vehicle for carrying a message.

Similar, but not quite identical, don’t twist the characters to serve the message. The character who has the Wrong Views doesn’t also need to be mean, ugly, unlikable, and miserable. The one with the Right Views doesn’t need to be handsome, likable, and accomplished. Don’t act like you’re God, doling out just punishments and rewards to your characters.”

The example I quoted above may not serve the most effective argument (since the forum is primarily meant for aspiring writers), but it does make sense without taking things out of context or getting too sidelined by doctrined morality and the like.

How about you, dear readers?

I’d like to hear your inputs on the matter. :-/

Here's one more beauty event to take place in Manila - Miss Global 2015

Miss Global 2014 Ela Mino will crown her successor here in Manila

Aside from the 10th Mister International happening here in Manila come November 28, there will be another pageant scheduled to be hosted by the country a month earlier – Miss Global 2015.

You will remember last year’s event which was held inside a Royal Princess Cruise Ship that sailed from the Port of Los Angeles to Mexico. This time, Resorts World Manila will be the venue and the coronation night has been set for October 24.

Reigning winner Ela Mino of Canada will crown her successor here. And the winner of Miss Global Philippines 2015 – which started screening today – will be the country’s representative to the same.

Wow, this is really going to be another super busy pageant year! :-)

I have more reasons to be thankful

A truly busy half for 2015 in pageants!

image

The first of the Grand Slam Pageants to take place

The second half of 2015 won’t be starting until the first of July, but one month ahead of that date, it’s looking like pageants are going to be more than full blast, as per my planned coverage. And we’re talking both locally and internationally, with big national contests even playing in the mix. Just consider the schedule below.

June, 2015:
Miss Universe Australia 2015 (June 5)
Miss Manila 2015 (June 24)

July, 2015:
Miss USA 2015 (July 2)

August, 2015:
Miss Global Philippines 2015
Mutya ng Pilipinas 2015

September, 2015:
Miss Republic of the Philippines 2015 (September 9)
Misters2015 / Mister Filipinas Search (September 13)

October, 2015:
Miss Global 2015 (October 24)
Miss International Queen 2015 (October 31)

November, 2015:
Miss International 2015 (November 5)
Miss Earth 2015
10th Mister International (November 28)

December, 2015:
Miss Supranational 2015 (December 4)
Miss Intercontinental 2015
Miss World 2015 (December 19)
Miss Universe 2015
Miss Tourism International 2015 (December 31)

image

A last-minute addition to the list

FYI, Bb. Pilipinas International 2015 Janicel Lubina will be the first among our Bb. Pilipinas 2015 Queens to wage beauty battle abroad with Miss International 2015 already scheduled for November 5 in Tokyo, with Bb. Pilipinas Supranational 2015 Rogelie Catacutan following suit a couple of weeks after just in time for Miss Supranational 2015 in Krakow, Poland on December 4. But even before that happens, there is quite a number of national pageants that will be finalized between August and October.

The highlights, of course, will come to a head on December again. And that’s when pageant fever will reach its peak.

So c’mon and join the ride with me for Pageant Salvo 2015! :-D

Designer Chico Estiva Dos created this ensemble (Photo credit: Lito Caleon)

During the finals night of Miss Philippines Earth 2015, the winner of the Best Cultural Costume was awarded, along with the announcement that the traditional attire will be worn by the Philippine representative to Miss Earth 2015.

And when Miss Lipa City Paris Silva was called to centerstage to receive the honor, there was probably no other individual more ecstatic than the designer himself, Chico Estiva Dos. The mere thought of having one of his creations proudly displayed in the international pageant stage should give him a lot of reasons to look forward to the same. And I sincerely hope that Miss Philippines Earth 2015 Angelia Ong will indeed end up donning the lavish costume. It will be one fulfilled dream for the man who toiled on the whole get-up.

Well done, Chico! :-)

Miss World 2014 Rolene Strauss is definitely going back to Medical School next year

Where Rolene is studying

Where Rolene is studying

If you think Rolene Strauss is enjoying her reign as Miss World 2014, then you’re absolutely right. She is living the life of a big-time beauty queen to the fullest. And she has her commitment at 100%. But only up to the time that she fully serves her term and relinquishes the blue crown to her successor by December 19.

You see, Rolene considers her Miss World stint as simply living on beautifully borrowed time. And for the 2016 academic year, she is excited to return to her Medical Studies at the University of the Free State where she is currently in Senior Year before putting everything on hold when she won Miss South Africa and the larger pageant. In a latest Instagram post, she uploaded a photo of her study notes in Med School with the following caption:

“Playing ‘doctor’ with my dad at the hospital and had to brush up on some anatomy…Studying again next year and can’t not be ready”

So as you can see, Miss World 2014 is not about to overstay her welcome as a celebrity in the limelight. Her priorities are in place. And more than anything else, she would find self-actualization the moment she finally adds a different title to her name – M.D. (Doctor of Medicine). But before that happens, she will need to finish one more year to claim her MBcHB ( Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) degree. ;-)

Miss Universe Philippines 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach loving the sun of Puerto Galera

image I know it’s already June, but the scorching summer heat is still wreaking havoc on everyone’s skin and temperament. But not on our Miss Universe Philippines 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach who is working on getting herself some good old natural tan. Despite the struggle, that is.

Over the weekend, Pia went to Puerto Galera for some work/photoshoot commitments. And she took the opportunity to spend the lull hours just hanging around the pool area in her green two-piece bikini, and hopefully get that much-needed color on her skin that would make her look glowing even more.

How much tan do you prefer on our Queen P? Do you want her skin glistening in a shade that would bring out more of her Filipina charm? Or do you simply prefer her being the fair lady for Miss Universe? ;-)

Diana Mackey: Next stop, Bb. Pilipinas 2016?

Last Sunday night, pageant watchers were almost in unison that Diana Mackey could pull an upset in the results of Miss Philippines Earth 2015. She was simply a knockout beauty who tackled her swimsuit and evening gown turns with such fiery presence. In fact, she was giving eventual winner Angelia Ong and 2nd Placer Chanel Olive Thomas such tight competition that the crown has suddenly become a three-cornered fight to the finish. That is, until the Top 10 Q&A that separated the consistent performers from the scene-stealers.

Diana rendered her personal interview lackluster and without the required confidence to put a stamp of approval to her intended victory. As a result, she was relegated to Runner-Up status instead of a Crown-Wearer.

Do you know where you’re going to now, Miss Mackey? There are other options for consideration. Miss World Philippines 2015 could be one. And you still have more than a few months to prepare for that. But the buzz starting to reach my radar is that Bb. Pilipinas 2016 is the one being eyed for her next trip to the stage. Her followers couldn’t be happier if the latter would be the case.

Someone will be going to Shenzhen, China by late November to participate as the country’s bet in Mrs. Globe 2015. And she is Mrs. Philippines Globe 2015 Sherry Lou Villasenor.

Last Sunday around the same time that Miss Philippines Earth 2015 was being conducted at the SM MOA Arena, a separate beauty pageant for married women was also being finalized at the Moonbay Beach of Subic Bay Freeport Zone. Mrs. Philippines Globe 2015 had twenty (20) candidates who vied for the crown that will give the winner the right to represent the Philippines in Mrs. Globe 2015. And a multi-tasker of a mom (to two sons) and wife (to Bertrand Villasenor) was the proclaimed winner that night.

Sherry Lou will have more than enough time in her hands preparing for the international competition which will have its finals on the first week of December. Good luck in the training! :-)

Miss Earth 2014 Jamie Herrell gets a traditional welcome at Hilton Colombo

image

Tree planting a la Miss Earth 2014

Sri Lanka is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, a perfect place to have the finale of Miss Earth. We will be truly proud if that happens in the future.

Now before you get all excited, the quote above was lifted from Miss Earth Sri Lanka Imaya Mahalinayage’s bio last year for Miss Earth 2014.

But it does make one wonder why Miss Earth 2014 Jamie Herrell travelled all the way to Colombo. More than the usual responsibilities of a titleholder like crowning the next Miss Earth reps of different countries, of course.

Honestly, I would be very happy if there will be an important meeting between Carousel Productions and the Sri Lankan franchise holder and country officials to discuss the possibility of the South Asian nation hosting Miss Earth. There is still no wishful clarity on the matter, though.

Colombo would make a wonderful host city if ever. I have watched quite a number of episodes of different travel shows that featured the place and even the far-flung provinces. Sri Lanka is a largely underrated tourist destination that needs to be visited by many.

Chanel Olive Thomas must have made a pact of sorts with Miss Philippines Earth 2015 Angelia Ong that whoever will win the whole thing will be fully supported by the other. The two ladies have become so close during the competition that they treat each other like sisters.

And now that Chanel was named Miss Philippines Air 2015, the activities will definitely put her side by side Angelia in all public appearances and charity projects. It will really benefit the organizers that their top two winners will solidly work hand-in-hand to make sure that their respective reigns become more significant in the next twelve months.

For now, this Fil-Aussie beauty will be busy with all her duties for Miss Philippines Earth and Carousel Productions. But who knows what she might jump into next when the right time comes. ;-)

Kimberly Karlsson, Miss Grand Philippines 2014

image

Kimberly with friend Ebba Samuelsson in Puerto Galera a few months back

Kimberly Anastasia Karlsson was Miss Grand Philippines 2014. And by the looks of it, she could possibly be the one and only holder of that exact title. Pinay Beauty Queen Academy – in collaboration with franchise holder John dela Vega – has already taken over the reins of holding the reality TV search for the country’s next representative to Miss Grand International 2015 who will be henceforth named Pinay Beauty Queen Grand International 2015.

While her stint during last year’s edition in Bangkok was not as eventful as she would have wanted it to be, Kimberly is still happy that she wore the Philippine sash with pride and gave it her best during the finals.

For now, she has moved on literally. Last April, she initially went to San Francisco just for a vacation. But plans have started to change, and she is already looking at studying there after all her papers are processed in order.

Here’s the latest update on Kimberly. In her own words.

Well right now, i’m just here on a 3-month vacation visiting my boyfriend (that’s how long i can stay here with my swedish passport with no visa) i’ve taken the TOEFL test already and sent in my college application during my time here :) i’m going back to Sweden on june 8th to get my student visa and my ticket back here to SF is july 17 :)

Honestly i don’t really know where i want to settle down yet so i’m gonna try to live in as many places as possible, i probably won’t stay here after i finished college, i’ll just move along to the next place like a nomad haha…

Anyway, I’ll be going to City College of San Francisco this fall and then after 2 years I’ll transfer to a University somewhere else in the US :) My goal is going to one of the Ivy’s. After that I don’t know where I’ll go.. Maybe London😂 and i might take a year off from my studies after I graduated from CCSF/before i transfer to a university, and come back to the philippines :) People have been asking me to join binibini or miss world so maybe i’ll do that when i come back :)

Go ahead with your study plans, Kimberly. You still have time in your hands to seriously think about making a second dip in beauty pageants. Enjoy the remaining days of your vacation! :-D

Yesterday afternoon, Bb. The ribbon cutting was performed by TV5 actress Ritz Azul who is the spa’s celebrity endorser. In attendance were Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 1993 Jenette Fernando (the aunt of Danielle) , Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2008 Jennifer Barrientos and Bb. Pilipinas International 2014 Bianca Guidotti. Representatives from ABS-CBN, GMA-7 and TV5 were also spotted among the selected guests.

Now, if you’ll get to see the large billboards of the place along C-5 and SLEX, Designer Bessie Besana (photo below) created the attires with Raymond Saldaña doing the photography.

Kaci Fennell for El Nuevo Dia

Whatever the real reason was behind Kaci Fennell finishing just 4th Runner-Up during the 63rd Miss Universe Pageant will remain a mystery. Was it a poor Q&A? Was her hair too short to be even considered within close striking distance to the crown? Was there a judge or judges who collectively gave her low scores to insure that she won’t come close to Paulina Vega?

In my books, this drop dead gorgeous Jamaican should have been the rightful winner. Hers is a beauty that speaks volumes. The short hair is there to simply reinforce her already stunning presence.

What say you, dear readers? ;-)

MPE2015 Angelia Ong by Collin Yap

Hers is a journey to the Miss Philippines Earth 2015 crown that had all the right moves beautifully conspiring to insure that the one major bump at the onset would work to her advantage.

Angelia Ong was almost disqualified in the beginning when she failed to attend an important personal appearance of the candidates due to a previous commitment she could no longer back out from. Humility reigned from her end. She went out of her way to iron things out with the organizers and made a sincere promise to make up for the unintended oversight. And boy, did she really work double time to regain the trust and confidence of everyone. It was smooth sailing from that point. She moved forward like a prancing gazelle and left a trail of medal-winning victories that gradually solidified her bid for the crown.

On finals night, Angelia’s stars must have been so positively aligned that – coupled with her carefully plotted gameplan – the climb to the top was anything but bouldering.

Indeed, the crown was hers to lose right off the bat. And this Ilongga-Manileña took extra caution – with a good dash of down-to-earth qualities – in her ascend to #1.

The morning after her victory, Angelia carefully laid down the crown, sash and trophy on top of her bed for a well-deserved shot.

imageimageI regretfully missed the Press Launch of Misters 2015: The Misters of Pilipinas Search yesterday afternoon at K-Pub in The Fort. I had to prioritize my brother’s wedding at St. John Bosco Parish and reception at Acacia Hotel Manila. And since I already informed the PEPPs people ahead of time, I just promised to blog about the special event.

The launch also coincided with the Official Send-Off of Mister Tourism International Philippines 2014 Judah Cohen for Mister Tourism International 2015 which will be hosted in Panama City come August. His fellow title holders – Mister International 2014/15 Neil Perez, Mister Global Philippines 2014 Joseph Doruelo, 1st Runner-Up Nicko Cruz – were around to give him words of encouragement for the upcoming competition. Mister International 2013 Jose Anmer Paredes was also present to add his message for Judah.

I am a bit disappointed about the delay, but under no circumstances have I been discouraged. I take the extra time to prepare as a blessing.” said Judah

This early, the screenings (which will start on July 5 at the PEPPs office* in the City of San Juan) are expected to attract a good number of enlisters, with majority of the representatives of Filipino Communities abroad already in place and just waiting for their scheduled trips to Manila by the 3rd week of August.

For the second year in a row (and as I expected), a repeater was crowned Miss Universe Australia 2015.

Monika Radulovic, who was also part of last year’s edition of Australia’s national finals for Miss Universe, got what she worked hard for and will now be Down Under’s representative to Miss Universe 2015. She effectively succeeded Tegan Martin (a repeater from 2013) who placed in the Top 10 in the 63rd Miss Universe Pageant held in Doral, Miami.

Monika was joined in the Top 5 by 1st Runner-Up Madeleine Cowe, 2nd Runner-Up Melissa Barnard, 3rd Runner-Up Chanel Stewart and 4th Runner-Up Tasha Ross.
